Scholarships 2010White Plains, NY, June 1, 201019 students from the 3 local high schools - White Plains High School, Archbishop Stepinac High School and Academy of Our Lady of Good Counsel High School - received scholarships and music awards today from The Rotary Club of White Plains. The scholarship presentation was led by Nick Wolfe, White Plains Rotary Scholarship Chair. OUR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMIn 1961, under the leadership of Dr. Morton Flaherty, our club established the Scholarship Foundation to oversee the management and investment of the capital of a fund designed to assist worthy college-bound graduates of Archbishop Stepinac High School, Good Counsel Academy and White Plains High School. This year we are pleased to award seventeen scholarships and two music awards to our deserving youth. Of the scholarships given this year, six are designated to honor particular Rotarians and individuals: The Thomas W. Bachman Scholarship honors the late Tom Bachman, a W.P. Rotarian from 1954-1994, who was a local insurance broker. Upon his passing, Tom left a sizeable part of his estate to the W.P. Rotary Foundation for scholarships. This bequest enabled us to create the investment portfolio that supports many of our current scholarships. The Michelle and Michael Mooney Scholarship was created by our club to honor the memory of Michael Mooney, Past President ( 1987-1988 ) who died unexpectedly in 2000, and his daughter, Michelle, who passed away suddenly at a very young age in 1988. The John W. Ruger Scholarship has been established by the Ruger Family upon the death of our beloved and highly respected Past District Governor “Jack” Ruger, known affectionately and appropriately as ‘Mr. Rotary,’ in recognition of his many long years of meritorious service that PDG Jack gave to all of us in Rotary here and around the world. The Henry O. Mertens Scholarship honors our 1994-95 Past President Henry Mertens who promoted the Rotary ideals of peace, international understanding and friendship through education. Henry’s spouse, Elyse, established this scholarship upon Henry’s untimely death to help young people seek peace through education. The Edward Anderberg Scholarship recognizes Past President Ed Anderberg who served our club with distinction as our President from 1980 to 1981. Ed’s family established this scholarship upon his passing to promote Rotary’s ideal of ‘Service Above Self’ to inspire deserving youth to lives of service to others. The Frank Mascari Scholarship gives fitting recognition to the dedicated and loyal service of our “most senior Rotarian” who has substantially contributed to the Rotary Foundation by being a multiple sustaining Paul Harris Fellow and example of “persistence under stress” and selfless service to others.
